Dear Wheeling University Administration, Faculty, Staff, and Students,

We are happy to announce that several popular academic and athletic programs that had been temporarily discontinued in 2019 will be returning in 2020, along with several new offerings.

Beginning in January of 2020, Wheeling University will resume offering majors in Biology (BS), Engineering Science (BS), English (BA). To help facilitate the reinstatement of these programs, two full-time faculty members in Engineering and Biology will be hired to teach new classes.

In addition, we will also begin offering two all-new fully online programs in January of 2020: Criminal Justice (BA) and Psychology (BA). This evolution of our academic programs reflects the changing interests, logistics, and educational habits of young learners, who are increasingly interested in pursuing their degrees in online or blended learning formats.

Several beloved Wheeling University athletic programs will also be reinstated in 2020, including men’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and men’s and women’s swimming. We will also introduce Competitive Cheerleading as a new sport for our student-athletes beginning in 2020, which will give our Cardinals even more opportunities to shine at the regional and national level.

Growing enrollment, the creation of these new and returning positions in our faculty, and the addition of exciting new offerings like our online programs and our cheerleading team all help demonstrate Wheeling University’s ongoing commitment to educational excellence.

I know that eliminating these programs last March was a difficult decision for our previous administration. I’m happy that we are able to offer them once again to our students, and to provide new employment opportunities for the faculty and staff members who will bring these programs to life.

Still, rather than considering the return of these programs as a victory that signals the end of Wheeling University’s recent challenges, I would encourage us to all see this moment as one more positive step on the road toward revitalization and stability that we are paving together, one day at a time.

Wheeling University’s long-term success depends not on any one program, administrator, or faculty member, but on all of us working together in a combined effort to give our best to our students each day.

Everything we achieve academically, athletically, financially, or administratively is all part of this collaborative process. Every idea shared, every innovative step, every proactive endeavor makes it possible for Wheeling University to grow, evolve, and thrive far into the future.

I am excited about the career and enrichment opportunities that these new and returning programs will create for everyone involved, and I look forward to working with each of you to help Wheeling University find even more victories to celebrate in the months to come.

Sincerely,

Ginny Favede

Wheeling University Board Chair
