Dona'e Albert, a WJU senior, recently held a donation drive on campus to collect items for the homeless community in Wheeling. Albert took the donated items and turned them into "Blessing Bags" to distribute to people experiencing homelessness in the local area.

Albert has been doing homeless outreach for four years and also serves as an advocate for the Wheeling area. She completes several projects throughout each semester and has even turned her back-porch into a workshop as well as transformed her car into a mobile outreach unit so she can deliver items if she notices someone living on the street.

Albert's original goal was to make up 100 bags, but she ended up with more than 500 bags to donate. The gallon-size Ziploc bags contain different types of travel-size toiletries including chapstick, tissues, deodorant, tooth brushes and tooth paste, mouthwash, combs, soap, hand sanitizer, shampoo and conditioner, band-aids, small candies and snacks and quarters to use on payphones. She received donations from all over the Wheeling community as well as students at the University.

"I was inspired to start my outreach for many reasons. I lost my home and everything in it to a house fire in 2013. My mom and I barely made it out. I experienced homelessness first hand and I know exactly what it's like. I want to help others and be able to change the world. I feel called upon to do this. It makes me so happy that I am able to help others through this work," said Albert.

Albert has already started to plan her next outreach project for February.
