Service immersion trips are an important part of the student experience at Wheeling Jesuit University. Students are encouraged to continually develop and challenge themselves in the service world. These unique trips create opportunities for students to step outside of their everyday life and encounter people much different from themselves. It is on these immersions that students have the chance to give back, while also learning more about the world and themselves. These experiences ultimately encourage students to ask questions, and to see how they can give back in their own communities.

Eight students departed right before the New Year on December 29. Dona’e Albert, Madeline Davin, Stephen Gretchen, Faith-Cailaa Harris, Felicity Nolder, Katherine Swanson, Bernadette Tirador, John Washington with Fr. Hadi Sasmita, S.J., traveled to San Salvador, El Salvador to participate in the week long voyage. Wheeling Jesuit has been working with the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart through their FIAT (Faith in Action Together) program in El Salvador since 2009 and we have since been sending at least one group of students each year.

On this trip, the students will participate in a variety of service and immersion activities. They will be helping to clear land and build houses in a village called Las Delicias. During this time, they will have the chance to visit and learn from the people of the community and play games with the children. They also will learn about and visit educational places such as the University of Central America where the six Jesuit priests and Elba and Celina Ramos were killed, where Saint Oscar Romero lived, and where he is buried, as well as where Fr. Rutillio Grande, S.J. was killed.

Colleen Ryan Mayrand, Director of the Service for Action Center, explained that she sees students that attend this particular immersion trip come back not only with an awareness of the world, but also the importance of standing for justice. The students will be returning from El Salvador on Saturday, January 5, just in time for the start of the spring semester.
