The Wheeling Jesuit University football team will take the field one more time to play in their first evening game this weekend. The Cardinals will host Jireh Preparatory Academy on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. at Bishop Schmitt Field to wrap-up the 2018 exhibition schedule.

“I think it is exciting to play a night game this late in the season. I think it will be fun for our players to play under the lights, and it will be fun for the fans and students to enjoy this atmosphere with tailgating and so on. I believe it is great for all parties involved,” said Zac Bruney, head football coach.

If they win on Saturday night, the Cardinals will finish their season undefeated. Although it was only an exhibition schedule, they have won six of their last seven games by a large margin of at least 24 points.

WJU football will enter the Mountain East Conference (MEC) for the 2019-20 campaign to compete as a varsity NCAA Division II program. Bruney understands that the Cardinals have a long way to go in order to be ready for next season, but he is pleased with the weekly growth of his team. He believes they are only going to continue to get better and more mature once they start their off-season program with intense training, which will happen through conditioning in the weight room, studying film, and building their knowledge to support the development of team chemistry – both on and off the field.

“I am looking forward to us continuing to evolve and develop as a culture and a football program.  We will need to make giant strides to be competitive in the Mountain East,” Bruney said. “It is a giant challenge, but one that is exciting and we are looking forward to what lies ahead.”
