Wheeling, WV

For the first time in the history of Wheeling Jesuit University, there will be collegiate football action taking place on Bishop Schmitt Field.  WJU will face Hocking College this Saturday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. in the first home exhibition contest of the season.

The Cardinals will play an exhibition schedule that features 10 games against junior varsity teams representing NCAA Division I, II, and III schools and one junior college. After completing this exhibition season, WJU football will enter its first varsity schedule as a member of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) for the 2019-20 campaign.

This past Saturday, Sept. 1, the team traveled to Ithaca, N.Y., for a scrimmage against Cornell University. “This past weekend was a great experience. We had the chance to travel and stay overnight, eat dinner on the road, have a team breakfast, and do a walk through. Our guys handled the trip well,” said Zac Bruney, head football coach.

Bruney added, “We went up and battled against an Ivy League opponent. I’m hopeful that our performance this past weekend gives our guys the confidence to go out and compete in every game.”

The Cardinals have a tough season in front of them, including this first game. Hocking College has several second-year players who are fast and athletic, but Bruney believes his team has focused on their conditioning and he feels they are prepared for the upcoming challenges.

“The biggest thing for us is improvement. Not only on the field, but in every aspect,” Bruney said. “We are teaching them how to be accountable in everything they do – whether it’s academically, socially, or athletically. We want them to learn how to be responsible and reliable student-athletes. Our goal is to win, but we want to do it the right way.”
