Wheeling Jesuit Cross Country Regional Expectations
On Saturday, November 7, 2009, the Wheeling Jesuit men’s and women’s cross country teams will travel to Mansfield, Pennsylvania for the 2009 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championships at Lambs Creek Recreation Area. The women’s race is six kilometers (6k) which begins at 11:15 a.m. and the men’s 10 kilometer (10k) race will start at 12:15 p.m.
“Both teams are expected to perform well at this year’s regional meet,” said Ricky Moore. “We have set a team goal to finish in the Top 10 on the women’s side, and between10 and 12 for the men.”
Both teams are currently ranked outside of the Atlantic Region Top 10, but believe they are in the hunt. Despite a fifth place showing for both teams in the WVIAC Conference Championships, WJU is determined to place higher than all other conference schools.
“The course terrain at Lambs Creek Recreational Area better suits our athletes,” stated Coach Moore.
On the women’s side, Sarah Campanelli, Megan Truelove and Julia McGinley all finished in the Top 10 at the 5k WVIAC Championships. Campanelli has her sights set on a qualifying spot for nationals, and Truelove is looking to break into the Top 15 of the region. The Top 15 finishers at the regional meet represent the All-Region Teams. Campanelli, Truelove and McGinley will battle to finish in the Top 15. Former Wheeling Jesuit athlete, Carmen Blissit, is the only All-Region women's runner from the WVIAC.
The men look to continue their tradition of placing athletes on the All-Region Team. Ryan Beabout finished in the Top 5 at the 8k WVIAC Championships at 29:31.39 and expects to run a faster time in this event. Beabout is looking to place in the Top 10. Nick Bonaventure finished 12th at the WVIAC meet and is expecting to improve his time while capturing a spot in the Top 15.
