Lady Cards Knock Off 24th Ranked Kutztown University
Wheeling, WV, Sept. 14, 2009---After three consecutive losses, the Lady Cardinals (2-3) bounced back Monday afternoon by defeating the 24th ranked Kutztown University Golden Bears (4-1-1) at James LaRosa Stadium.
In the 15th minute, Wheeling Jesuit opened the scoring when freshman Shannon Post sent a perfect pass to junior Kara Houston for header and her first goal of the game.
The Cardinal defense would dominate the remaining 15 minutes of the period, denying the Golden Bears a goal on five corner kicks and seven shots. Senior Jessica Park recorded all four of her saves in the first half.
In the second period, Wheeling Jesuit continued to play outstanding defense despite allowing a goal in the 74th minute. Kutztown’s Molly Cooper broke loose of the Cardinal defense and tied the game 1-1.
Although Wheeling Jesuit was unable to break the tie in regulation, Kara Houston found the back of the net two minutes into the overtime period. Houston took a pass from Sophomore Megan Newrones and headed the ball into the net for the game-winner.
Wheeling Jesuit will return to action on Wednesday, September 16th as they travel to Parkersburg, WV for a conference showdown against Ohio Valley University at 4 p.m.
