Houston and McGinnis Combine for Five Goals
Athens, WV, Oct. 18, 2009---Wheeling Jesuit women’s soccer team recorded their second conference win on the weekend by defeating Concord University 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Cards jumped out to an early lead when freshman Ashley McGinnis hit the back of the net in the 4th minute. Ten minutes later, junior Kara Houston connected giving the Cards a 2-0 advantage.
In the 24th minute, McGinnis knocked down her second goal of the game, and second consecutive game winner off a pass from junior Hanna Walker. Concord’s Gemma Nortcliffe connected with a goal with 14 minutes remaining in the first half. The Cardinals held a 3-1 advantage at the break.
In the second half, Houston started the scoring and recorded he second goal of the game in the 52nd minute. With six minutes left in regulation, sophomore Megan Newrones found Houston for a third goal and her second consecutive hat trick performance.
Senior goalkeeper, Jessica Park, had eight saves on the day as she earned the decision.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Sunday, October 25th as the play host to Shepherd University during Wheeling Jesuit’s Family Weekend. Both women’s and men’s soccer teams will be supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing jerseys with the breast cancer logo during the Sunday double header.
The Cardinal men will kick off the event at noon followed by the women at 2:00 p.m. Please join us and support the fight against breast cancer.
