CARDS DOMINATE BOBCATS
Pool Record Falls in Dual Meet vs. Frostburg

Wheeling, WV, Nov. 13, 2009---The first home meet of the season brought a double win for the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals as they swam Frostburg University tonight at the WJU Alma Grace McDonough Natatorium.

Freshman standout Emily Martin captured the 100 Butterfly in a pool record time of 59.67. This was the first pool record to fall at the natatorium in several years. The 100 Fly record stood for 8 years before Martin erased it from the books.

Head Coach Rick West believes this is just the beginning of the record breaking.

“Jesuit has been in a period of rebuilding for the past several years,” West said. “We are starting to see the fruits of our labor. Our hard work is paying off and I see many more times and records falling.”

Martin was equally as confident. “Our 200 Freestyle Relay was also very close to a record,” Martin said. “It was awesome to get the 100 Fly, but it will also be great to share a relay record with my teammates.”

The Cardinal Women had several standout swims during the evening. Sophomore Chelsea Guissepi captured the 1000 freestyle (11:33.58) and Freshman Casey Hamilton won the 50 Freestyle (26.11).

The 100 Freestyle was won by junior freestyler Dulce Rizo. Rizo hit the wall, just touching out her Frostburg opponent in a time of 1:00.36.

Sophomore Jessica Steve touched first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:34.85 and the 200 Freestyle 2:04.48.

The 100 Backstroke was dominated by freshman Stephanie Blau (1:04.13).

The Women captured both relays, touching first in the 200 Medley with Blau, Sophomore Andrea Fitzgibbon, Martin and Hamilton with a time of 1:56.76. The final relay was exhibitioned.

The final score for the women was 118-65 in favor of the Cardinals.

The Cardinal Men also had a stellar evening. The Men dominated the Bobcats with a final score of 117-77.

Sophomore Ben Foreman captured the 1000 Freestyle in a time of 11:01.14 and Senior Sergio Bracamontes captured the 200 Freestyle in 1:50.99

The Men's 50 Freestyle saw the Cards sweep the event as Freshman Tom Smith (22.74), Sophomore Max Queale (22.9) and Sophomore Andrew Tran (23.91) touched one, two, three.

Freshman IM'er Matt Logan had a pair of wins in the 200 IM (2:05.17) and the 100 Backstroke (56.51).

The 100 Yard Butterfly was a winner for Freshman Patrick Chadowski as he touched the wall in 54.62.

The Cardinal Men won both Relays, however the final relay was scored exhibition. The 200 Medley Relay of Logan, Freshman Bill Risse, Chadowski and Smith touched in 1:42.87.

West was pleased with both outcomes.

“I'm pleased with how we swam tonight,” he said. “It is refreshing to see how our focus is paying off. We are getting there. We are far from where we want to be...but we are getting there.”

The Cardinals are back in action on November 14 at noon at the Natatorium. The meet will also be simulcast live on CardinalCast and in the future on Comcast on Demand.
