WJU’s Jim Regan Reaches 300 Wins
Wheeling Jesuit men’s soccer team (6-2-1, 3-1 WVIAC) traveled to Philippi, WV for a match with the Battlers of Alderson-Broaddus College (3-5, 1-3 WVIAC) on Saturday, September 26th. The Cardinals came away with the 4-0 descision, giving Head Coach Jim Regan his 300th Career Victory.
In the first half, the Cardinals started the scoring in the 14th minute when sophomore Victor Picchio sent a 30 yard shot clipping the right post into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage. WJU attempted six shots and would hold the lead into the break.
The battlers attempted six shots in the opening half, including four on goal but could not get them past junior goalkeeper Shane Young. Young recorded four saves in the half.
The second half Cardinal offense surged for three goals and almost doubled their shot attempts with 11. Sophomore Andrew Hickey received a pass from freshman Dominic Welsh and sent the ball across the box for a 2-0 lead. Junior Stephen Hawthorne would connect for with the next two goals, one coming from junior Nik Balzer.
Young earned the decision and recorded a shutout with seven saves.
The win also gave Wheeling Jesuit’s Jim Regan his 300th career victory for men’s soccer, as his record now moves to 300-176-40 in the 27th season leading the Cardinals.
“Everyone did their job today and did it well,” said Regan. “It was a good team effort all-around and that is how our program has accumulated 300 wins over the last 27 seasons.”
