Wilson Sinks Game Winner in OT
Wheeling, WV, Oct. 21, 2009---Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team scored in the first minute of the overtime period to overcome the Mountain Cats of Pitt-Johnstown.
In the first period, the Cardinals maintained possession for most of the half and fired seven shots to the Cats two. Junior Adam Pharo sent a shot off the post in the 14th minute which was rebounded by sophomore Victor Picchio, who recorded Jesuit's first goal. The Cardinals would hold a 1-0 advantage to the break.
The second period, Pitt-Johnstown began to attack the goal and doubled their first half shots with four. In the 60th minute, the Jesuit defense allowed an own goal, tying the game 1-1. Junior keeper, Shane Young, tallied three save all in the second half. Wheeling could not connect with a game winner in regulation and the game was forced to overtime.
The Cardinals immediately began to attack the Mountain Cats' defense in overtime, setting up a corner kick opportunity. Pharo sent the corner in play to senior T.J. O'Brien who found sophomore Billy Wilson in the middle of the box. Wilson knocked down the game winner 57 seconds into the overtime period.
Wheeling Jesuit will play host to Franciscan University on Friday, October 23rd at James LaRosa Stadium. This will be a non-conference match that was canceled due to field conditions earlier in the month. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. |
