Jesuit Men Serve Shutout, but Can’t Connect
Wheeling, WV, Oct. 25, 2009---Wheeling Jesuit men’s soccer team wore black jerseys with pink letters and numbers on Senior Day to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Sunday, October 25, 2009 for Wheeling Jesuit’s Family Weekend game against Shepherd University. All of the team members handed out pink roses to their mothers, guardians, and grandmas to show support as well.
Seniors #4 Hans Moses, #13 Jason Smith, #15 T.J. O’Brien, #18 Marjan Moro, #22 Tony Trabert and #23 Eric Steele were all recognized prior to the start of the game. The Cardinals failed to score in 120 minutes of play, recording a 0-0 tie on the last regular season conference home contest.
In the first half, time of possession was equally distributed as Wheeling Jesuit attempted seven shots and six corner kicks without connecting.
Shepherd Rams goalkeeper, Edger Lopez Zuniga recorded three of his eleven saves, and Jesuit goalkeeper, Shane Young stopped six of the nine shots in his direction.
The Cardinals would outshoot the rams ten to seven in the second period and Young continued to play solid in the net, stopping two more shots. He would collect two more saves, one in each overtime period to complete the 10 save shutout.
The Cardinals are 10-4-3 overall and 6-2-2 in the WVIAC which currently stands as the third place spot. Wheeling Jesuit will travel to California University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday, October 28th for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off.
