Wheeling rides 5-0 3rd quarter to beat Queens University 9-7
Charlotte, NC, March 3,2009--- The Wheeling Jesuit Lacrosse team started off the 2008-09 season with an impressive win over talented Queens University. The Cardinals had to overcome a constant down pour of freezing rain and an hour delay due to lightning. Queens opened up the game with a goal for an early lead. Phil Mergner (So., Hollywood, MD) started the cardinal scoring attack with a goal from Jack Malone (Jr., Farmington Hills, MI), which was the first of Malone’s four assists on the day (he also added a goal).
Queens scored three unansered goals to begin the second quarter wit a 5-2 lead. Eric Jenkins (Jr., Pleasanton, CA) closed the gap to 5-3 with one of his two goals. Kyle Lucas (Fr., Dublin,OH) scored the first of his three goals with 10 seconds to play to put the game within one going into the half.
Lightning delayed the second half, when play resumed the Cards exploded for five unanswered goals. Luke Jansen (Jr., Denver,CO) was 6 for 6 at the face-off X and 13 for 20 on the day. John Dunbar (Jr., Eagan, MN) and Jeff Arneson (Jr., Wilmington, OH) both added goals in the third quarter to solidify the Cardinals run.
Goalie Joe Sims (Jr., Dublin, OH) made some big saves in clutch situations and finished the day with 8 saves on 15 shots.
The Cardinals return to action this weekend where they will take on Pace and the defending national champions New York Institute of Technology on Friday and Sunday respectively.
