Wheeling Jesuit University

Scholarship Day Set for February 4

Wheeling Jesuit University will award numerous scholarships and awards during its annual “Scholarship Day,” scheduled to occur Saturday, February 4, 2006.

The Catholic university offers scholarships and awards for community service, vocal talent, as well as musical instrumental talent.

“There is also an award given to a child or grandchild of WJU alumni, and a scholarship for a student from the Pittsburgh, PA area,” says Carol Descak, Dean of Admissions at Wheeling Jesuit University. “Most scholarships and awards are offered regardless of financial need and can be added to other scholarships awarded by the University.”

To be eligible to compete, students must apply and be accepted to Wheeling Jesuit University prior to Scholarship Day. Students may compete and/or audition for any of the awards listed below for which they qualify:

Pedro Arrupe, S.J. Award
Founded on the Jesuit axiom, “men and women for others,” the Arrupe Award is for the student who has a distinguished record of community service and Christian leadership as a high school student, and who intends to deepen his/her understanding of and commitment to service at Wheeling Jesuit. A minimum of a 2.8 cumulative high school GPA is required to apply. If selected, a student has the opportunity to earn $6,000 ($1,500 per year for four years) provided that he/she is involved in ongoing community service work in the Wheeling area, maintains a 2.75 cumulative college grade point average, and participates in the reflection sessions and education activities outlined in the award. Up to five students will receive Arrupe Awards.

Choral Award and Music Ministry Award
Wheeling Jesuit’s campus life is enriched by many musically talented students. Students with a vocal or instrumental musical gift may audition to receive either of these awards. Students selected for the Choral Award will earn $4,000 ($1,000 per year for four years), and if selected for the Music Ministry Award, students will earn $8,000 ($2,000 per year for four years). These scholarships are renewable provided the students participate actively in the program.
Note: The above award competitions will be scheduled through WJU by appointment only.

Carrigan Alumni Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded by the WJU Alumni Association and is presented to children and grandchildren of alumni who display compassion, commitment, an ability to recognize goodness and uniqueness in others, and a work ethic that involves friendship and loyalty. In addition, students must have at least a 2.5 cumulative high school GPA. The Carrigan Alumni Scholarship is worth at least $2,000, awarded over a four-year period.

Frank Kirk Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in August 1998 by an anonymous donor through the WJU Alumni Association. Applicants must be current residents of Pittsburgh, PA, or the surrounding suburbs and demonstrate financial need. The award amount varies depending on the number of students who receive the scholarship.
